Yunnan, in southwestern China borders Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. It’s a lush green, diverse province that doesn’t look anything like the China you normally see. I loved visiting Xishaungbanna but there was one activity that really stood out!
The Dai Water Splashing Festival is definitely one of the most vibrant and joyful celebrations in southwest China. Held annually in Xishuangbanna Yunnan, this event attracts thousands of visitors from around the world who come to experience the unique traditions, cultural richness, and, of course, the water fights.
You might have seen similar festivals in Thailand & Myanmar and the water splashing festival in Yunnan is not only just as fun – but you’re also able to experience it somewhat all year round!

What is the water splashing festival in Xishuangbanna?
The water splashing festival in Xishuangbanna is primarily celebrated by the Dai ethnic minority in Yunnan. It usually takes place in mid-April and marks the Dai New Year, but at certain locations it’s possible to experience the celebrations all year round.
Water plays a central role in the celebration, symbolising purification, renewal, and good fortune. During the Yunnan water splashing festival, people throw water on each other as a way of washing away bad luck and welcoming a fresh start.
Unlike typical New Year celebrations, the water splashing festival Yunnan is deeply rooted in Buddhist traditions. Before the playful water fights begin, locals participate in solemn rituals such as bathing Buddha statues, offering prayers at temples, and releasing floating lanterns.
Main activities during the festival
One of the highlights of the water splashing festival in China is the water throwing itself. Streets turn into lively battlegrounds where locals and tourists alike join in the fun. Armed with buckets, water guns, and even hoses, participants soak each other in a cheerful atmosphere.
It’s not just about water fights though – other key activities include:
- Buddha bathing ceremony: A sacred ritual where water is gently poured over Buddha statues.
- Dragon boat races: Exciting competitions held on rivers, showcasing teamwork and strength.
- Peacock dance performances: A traditional dance symbolizing beauty and grace.
- Floating lanterns: Released into the sky or rivers to carry away misfortune.

Best places to experience the festival
While the water splashing festival in China is celebrated in several regions, the most famous celebrations take place in Xishuangbanna in Yunnan. This area is home to a large Dai populations and offer the most authentic experiences.
In Xishuangbanna the main place to visit is known as ‘Water Splashing Square’. You don’t have to visit just during April as at the water splashing square they hold daily water splashing activities – I went in September and it was still busy and lively.
📍Location – China, Yunnan, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Jinghong, 058乡道橄榄坝 邮政编码: 666108

It’s a giant almost stadium-like area with a huge central fountain and seating around the top. It’s decorated like a temple and there’s a stage for performances.

Practical tips for the Xishuangbanna water splashing festival
Opening times – The park welcomes visitors from 8am until 6pm with the main splashing events held twice daily at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm. You are free to arrive before and stay afterwards but you’ll want to at least make sure you’re there in plenty of time to change and take photos before the event.
How much does it cost? – Entrance and shuttle tickets generally cost 105元 which you can buy on the day, but you can often find them for discounted prices through local cab drivers. Many drivers have access to promotional rates and will buy the tickets for you – you can pay them by AliPay or WeChat.
How much does it cost to rent the local attire? – For just 5 ~ 15元, you can rent a basin and traditional Dai attire, which is definitely worth it. Not only will you look the part, but it’s far easier than bringing extra clothes. You’ll also be given a pouch with some shampoo and a pretty amazing expandable towel.

What happens during the main splashing events? – Everyone gathers at a distance around the main fountain. There are musical performances and various floats with elephants and other animals as well as Buddhist symbology. When the parade has finished there’s an announcement and everyone runs into the centre of the main square.
The fountains shoot water high into the air and the centre point fills up with water. If you’ve hired a bowl then you’ll be able to start filling it and throwing it now! This lasts for half an hour or so and then there are more musical performances/DJs and everyone gets involved dancing – it’s so much fun!

Why you should experience water splashing in Yunnan?
Ultimately, we had so much fun at the Xishuangbanna water splashing festival. We were made to feel super welcome and really got stuck in! Even if you’re a solo traveller, you’d still be able to join and play with other people!
It was great to experience something that you don’t see much of on social media too. Although the similar festivals in Thailand get a lot of attention online, I hadn’t really seen the water splashing festivals in China pop up much, so I didn’t know what to expect!
It’s a really great chance to join in with an authentic experience that the locals love to take part in too!
