It’s certainly one of the most fascinating cities in Morocco. Located at the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it has long been a gateway between Europe and Africa.
Over the centuries it has attracted artists, writers, explorers and travellers looking for something a little different and they’ve left a lovely bohemian feel to the city.

From wandering the historic Medina to visiting the legendary Cave of Hercules, Tangier offers a mix of culture, history, stunning views and coastal adventures.
I’ve put together this guide to the best things to do in Tangier, including must-see attractions, hidden gems, and travel tips to help you plan the perfect visit.
So without further ado, let’s dive into what to see and do in Tangier, Morocco.
About Tangier, Morocco
Tangier sits in northern Morocco just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. Because of its location, the city has a fascinating blend of Moroccan, Spanish, French and international influences.
For decades Tangier was known as an international zone where artists and writers like Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs spent time. Today it remains one of Morocco’s most unique cities, with a relaxed coastal atmosphere combined with vibrant Moroccan culture.

Visitors often include Tangier in their Morocco itinerary because it’s easily accessible from Spain via ferry and has plenty of attractions to explore in and around the city.
Best Things To Do In Tangier
Here are the top attractions and experiences in Tangier you shouldn’t miss.
Explore the Tangier Medina
The Medina is the historic heart of Tangier and one of the most exciting places to explore.
This maze of narrow streets is packed with small shops, markets, traditional houses and cafés. As you wander through the Medina you’ll discover hidden courtyards, colourful doorways and local artisans selling handmade goods. It’s easy to navigate on your own but if you’re looking for more history and information then you can hire a local guide.

Don’t miss the Grand Socco square, which acts as the main entrance to the old city. It’s easy to spend hours simply walking through the Medina and soaking up the atmosphere.
Visit the Kasbah Museum
Located at the top of the Medina, the Kasbah is one of the most historic parts of Tangier. If you’ve always wondered what the kasbah in ‘rock the casbah’ was, it essentially means the citadel of a North African city.
The Kasbah Museum in Tangier displays artefacts from Morocco’s ancient civilisations including Roman mosaics, ceramics and traditional Moroccan art. Besides the exhibits, the building itself is beautiful with peaceful courtyards and traditional architecture.
It does have a number of changing exhibits as well as the permanent ones.

See The Cave Of Hercules
One of the most famous attractions near Tangier is the Cave of Hercules. According to legend, Hercules rested here after splitting the land into Europe & Africa.
In addition to its legends, the cave is also famous for its sea-facing opening shaped like the African continent. It’s located right on the coast (of course) and you can walk around the coastal area and visit the small market stalls before enjoying the cave itself.
It’s a really interesting place and the cave features some unusual rock formations. You can book tours to the caves that also include a few other sights in Tangier here.

Visit Cap Spartel
Cap Spartel (or Cape Sparkle) marks the northwestern most point of the African continent.
There is a lighthouse on top of the cliffs – one of the largest lighthouses in Africa – marking the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar on the Atlantic side.
Built in 1864, it overlooks the dramatic cliffs west of Tangier at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, a crucial passage for international maritime traffic. The lighthouse was established through an international agreement among several European powers to help guide ships safely through these busy waters. Rising about 25m high it is visible for many kilometres out at sea.

Visit the point where the sea & the ocean meet
At Cap Spartel, you can also visit the famous spot where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.
Standing on the cliffs near the lighthouse, you’ll have incredible views across the Strait of Gibraltar, and on clear days you can even see the coast of Spain. It’s one of the most scenic viewpoints near Tangier and a popular stop on coastal tours.
There is a popular photo spot too, which is a signpost marking specifically where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. The sign is written in French and Arabic, the two official languages of Morocco.

Walk Along Tangier Beach & The Corniche
Tangier has a long sandy beach – Plage Municipale that stretches along the city’s coastline.
The Corniche promenade runs alongside the beach and is one of the best places to relax, walk or watch the sunset. You’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants and spots to sit while enjoying views of the sea.
On clear days you can even see the coast of Spain across the water.
Visit the Roman-Punic Necropolis
Near Cape Spartel and the Cave of Hercules, you’ll find the Roman-Punic Necropolis, an ancient burial site carved directly into the coastal cliffs.
The square holes cut into the rock are actually 2,000-year-old tombs from the Punic and Roman periods. Today they create striking openings that frame views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s a quick but fascinating stop, especially if you’re already exploring the nearby coastal attractions.
Visit Tangier’s local markets & shops
Tangier has several lively markets where you can experience everyday Moroccan life. You’ll find spices, fresh fruit, handmade crafts, carpets and traditional clothing. Bargaining is common in markets, so don’t be afraid to negotiate prices.
The most typical places to go shopping for visitors are the city’s two souks: the Grand Socco, which is situated on the central 9 April 1947 Square, and the Petit Socco, which is within the Medina.
Tangier is also still a haven for artists and I loved walking around and seeing small shops with beautiful paintings displayed and even alleyways with art for sale hung up on walls.

Enjoy Traditional Moroccan Cuisine
One of the highlights of visiting Tangier is the food. Moroccan cuisine is famous for its bold flavours, spices and slow-cooked dishes and Tangier is often a highlight on a foodie trail of the country.
Some dishes you should try include:
- Tagine – slow cooked meat or vegetables
- Couscous – Morocco’s national dish
- Pastilla – sweet and savoury pastry
- Mint tea – a traditional Moroccan drink

Many restaurants offer rooftop terraces with amazing views over the Medina and sea. A favourite spot for tourists and locals is the Salon Bleu which overlooks the Medina as well as the water. If you’re wanting to do more of a deep dive into local cuisine then consider booking a local cooking class.
Enjoy a drink at a famous café
One of the most famous cafes in Tangier is Café Hafa. It is located along the cliff top overlooking the Bay of Tangier. Opened in 1921, it has become a bit of an icon in the city. The cafe still maintains its original decor with multiple levels of terrace seating, facing the Strait of Gibraltar with Tarifa, Spain visible in the distance.
I enjoyed a sweet mint tea whilst overlooking the turquoise water. I particularly enjoyed that although there were a few foreigners there, it mainly seemed popular with locals and domestic tourists.
It has had many famous visitors over the years including the writer Juan Goytisolo & the The Rolling Stones and although it might not be the haunt of bohemians anymore, it’s a very pretty place that could still perhaps inspire art.
