What to Wear in Oman as a Woman

When deciding what to wear in Oman as a woman, one should also be mindful of covering arms and legs when exploring traditional markets, historical sites, or smaller towns. While the Oman dress code is more relaxed in the cities, it’s always better to err on the side of modesty.
I always carry a lightweight scarf with me as it’s useful to cover your head or shoulders if needed, especially when visiting a mosque or more traditional areas.
In Muscat, as the city has lots of visitors coming on day trips from cruises, the dress code is a little less conservative, or at least you will see tourists wearing less modest attire, and you could probably get away with long trousers and a vest top, although it’s still better to cover up if possible. Remember that in some areas at night time it can get quite cold, so do pack a jumper or light jacket if you’re planning on doing on evening walks or star gazing.
What to Wear in Oman for Men
Men should also follow the Oman dress code by choosing modest clothing. Long trousers and light shirts are perfect for most occasions. While shorts are acceptable in certain casual or touristy spots, wearing long trousers will help you avoid any discomfort or unwanted attention in public places like cities and cultural sites. The traditional attire for Omani men is the dishdasha, a long robe usually worn in white, but tourists are not expected to wear it.
Packing light and breathable clothing will help you deal with Oman’s hot temperatures while respecting the Oman dress code. A light jacket or shawl can also come in handy for cooler evenings, especially if you are visiting during the winter months or traveling to the desert.
What to Wear at Oman’s Beaches and swimming areas

I visited a few of the Wadis and at some you are allowed to swim and others you aren’t. Wadi Shab was a highlight of my visit to Oman and here many people (myself included) opted for bikinis or swim suits, as there are some very narrow swimming gaps between rocks which would be difficult in billowing clothes.

The Oman dress code does not restrict colors, so feel free to wear bright and vibrant outfits, especially if you’re planning to take photos against the beautiful natural landscapes of Oman, such as the desert or coastal towns.

Both men and women should dress more conservatively than usual, covering their arms and legs completely. Tight or revealing clothing should be avoided in all public spaces during Ramadan.
I visited some mosques during my time in Oman and although I felt that I was conservatively dressed and already had my legs, shoulders and head covered, I was required to hire a body and head covering, which I embraced gladly.
